This is an authentic, Edo Period c. 1900 antique, hand-carved wood NOH theatre mask painted with natural pigments over "gofun, " an oyster-based gesso, on hand-carved wood. This grimacing character, O-beshimi, has a mouth clamped firmly shut giving him an obstinate expression.

The nostrils and eyes are perforated. The whiskers and beard are real hair.

Noh is a major form of classical Japanese dance-drama that has been performed since the 14th century. This is a Kishin (Demon) mask, a type that was developed early in noh's history and is used for portraying tobide (fierce gods or demons) and beshimi (goblins and other creatures). A noh mask is small and does not entirely cover a noh performer's face when it is being worn. Part of the chin and/or jowls should show to enhance expressiveness. Measures about 6 1/2" H (8" including hair) and 4 1/2 W Condition: Very good antique condition, with some wear and loss of paint resulting from use and age.
